The Pittsburgh Pirates annihilated the Chicago Cubs yesterday at Wrigley Field with the Pirates victorious 14 to 7. You don’t often see such high scoring games, and anyone with Cubs tickets sure got their money’s worth. This high-scoring game saw the teams combine for a whopping 21 runs! Talk about excitement!
Pirates pitcher Jeff Karstens (4.88 ERA) got the win, while Ryan Dempster (3.71 ERA) took the loss for the Cubs. Jeff Karstens went 6 innings for the Pirates, allowed 4 hits, one home run and 2 earned runs with no walks and 6 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Pirates was Sean Gallagher (6.46), Chan Ho Park (5.52), and Chris Resop (5.54). The Cubs’s starter Ryan Dempster went 3 innings, allowed 7 hits, no home runs and 7 earned runs with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. Marcos Mateo (10.45), James Russell (4.54), Sean Marshall (2.85), and Carlos Marmol (3.19) also pitched for the Cubs. With the win, Karstens’s record goes to 3-10, while Dempster drops to 12-9.
Neil Walker provided much of the offense for the Pirates with an incredible 4 runs batted in. In addition to the 14 runs, the Pirates put up 15 hits and committed no errors. Neil Walker led the Pirates in hitting with 4 hits, followed by Jose Tabata’s 3 hits, and Andrew McCutchen with 3. Koyie Hill had the most hits for the Cubs (3), followed by Alfonso Soriano (2), and Starlin Castro (2). The Cubs mustered 7 runs, 10 hits and one error.
Umpiring duties were performed by Gary Darling, Bruce Dreckman, Paul Emmel and Bill Hohn. There were 31,369 Cubs ticket holders in attendance at Wrigley Field.
